Finding Color Inspiration

Finding color and texture inspiration in nature is one of the easiest ways to drama to your room! The only drama worth having in life is the drama created by sensual colors and stimulating textures. While looking to nature, we see smooth stones, eye-catching color and rustic textures working together to create tones, spaces and habitats that would make anyone envious of the animals living there. Applying these in your home can be as easy and effortless as combining a marble countertop with a live edge wood cheeseboard and soft green cabinets or dark wood floors, a jute rug, floral print armchairs and soft pink walls. Using nature to guide, gives us a beautiful blueprint of mixing masculine and feminine, dark and light, rugged and smooth.

Choosing a Floor Color

It seems like an easy task; choosing a floor color, yet it always ends up taking days and multiple debates. Too dark, every speck of dirt shows. Too red, and it looks dated. Too light, and the wood grain doesn’t pop. So go with middle of the road medium? Maybe?! How ‘bout we just flip a coin?!?

But there’s a better solution:

And this is going to sound crazy…but…let your house decide! Spending time in your home throughout the day, with different lighting, will tell you if that gorgeous ebony stain is too dark or absolutely perfect! Also, always have your flooring specialist stain a few samples to see the color options on your wood. Compared to teeny-tiny piece of paper, this will give you a more tangible sample. Although, keep in mind that it will be covering a vast area and will have a clear coat which will cause the color to be ever so slightly different. Let your space speak to you and your color choices will be on point, time and time again.

A Well-Loved Home is Well-Lived In

Remember, the thing that makes your space a home is living in it. There is beauty in the mess and chaos of everyday life. From toys all over the floor adding color to farm boots reminding of the work that keeps our home going, the everyday is even more lovely than the staged.

TONE ON TONE

By using tone on tone to showcase texture and style or to allow one color to be the focus will let your beloved pieces become centerstage. A slight variation in color can lead to a pleasing pallet while allowing the texture to be the center of attention. Using a neutral pallet is classic and calming, a more rich and vivid color can lead a room to be sensual and dramatic.

TEXTURE

Finding creative use of items to add personality, warmth and texture to a space. Texture is a current trend that stands to last a lifetime. Many classical styles that never go out are founded on the use of differing textures to secure the personality of a room. From marble to rattan, texture is a way to show your own unique personality, whether you layer to create an eccentric space or keep it light and simple to create the perfect modern dwelling. I love to see textures used in new and exciting ways, however, you can always fall back on old faithful standbys like soapstone countertops and rich wood floors.
